Snow rot, caused by the oomycete Globisporangium iwayamae, is a destructive fungal-like disease affecting winter cereals. Unlike many other plant pathogens, this organism thrives in cold, moist environments, making it a significant challenge for agriculture in temperate and cold regions where winter snow cover is consistent.

The primary host for this pathogen is winter wheat, although rye and barley are also frequently affected. The disease is classified as a soil-borne pathogen, as its spores persist in the soil and on crop residues, waiting for favorable conditions to infect young plants during the late autumn or winter dormancy period.

Clinical signs of infection typically emerge immediately after snowmelt. Infected plants exhibit mycelial mats that can appear white or greyish. Tissue disintegration occurs rapidly, with plants showing signs of soft rot at the crown area. In severe cases, large patches of the crop may be entirely destroyed, requiring reseeding in the spring.

The severity of the disease is strictly dictated by meteorological conditions. A thick, insulating snow cover over unfrozen ground provides an optimal temperature range (near 0°C) and high humidity, which accelerates the spread of Globisporangium iwayamae across the field while the host plants remain in a weakened, inactive state.

Management and prevention of snow rot require an integrated approach to reduce inoculum pressure and enhance plant vigor:

  • Utilize high-quality, fungicide-treated seeds to protect against early infection.
  • Implement balanced fertilization programs to ensure crops are not over-stimulated before winter.
  • Ensure fields are properly leveled and drained to avoid standing water in early spring.
  • Maintain proper crop rotation to break the survival cycle of the pathogen.
  • Monitor field conditions in early spring to assess the need for supplemental nitrogen or remedial actions.
