Pathogen and Disease Type. Torulosis is a fungal disease caused by the fungus Torula rubra. It belongs to the group of mold-forming fungi that primarily affect plant tissues during maturation or storage. The fungus is known for its ability to produce pigmented colonies, often displaying distinct reddish or brownish shades on infected surfaces, which is a key diagnostic feature of the pathogen.

Affected Crops. This fungus is primarily a pathogen of seeds and stored grains, but it can also affect various crops in the field under stress conditions. It is frequently observed on cereals, corn, and sunflower seeds. The pathogen often colonizes plant debris, making the soil an important reservoir for the infection cycle from one growing season to the next.

Symptoms and Signs. The primary visual symptom is the formation of a velvety, loose mycelial growth on the infected parts of the plant or seed. In contrast to common white molds, the presence of Torula rubra is marked by a brick-red or pinkish-red coloration of the moldy growth. In seeds, this results in a loss of vigor, darkened embryos, and a significant decrease in germination rate.

Conditions for Development. The fungus thrives in environments with high relative humidity and moderate temperatures. In agricultural settings, it becomes particularly problematic when moisture levels in stored grain exceed critical thresholds, or when crops are subjected to wet, humid weather during the harvest period. Poor ventilation in storage facilities significantly exacerbates the risk of rapid colonization.

Harmfulness and Control. The economic impact of torulosis is significant due to the reduction of seed viability and the potential contamination of grain with metabolites that degrade quality.

  • Implement rigorous drying protocols to ensure grain moisture remains below the threshold for mold growth.
  • Use systemic fungicides for seed treatment before sowing to prevent early-stage decay.
  • Maintain proper storage hygiene, including regular aeration and temperature monitoring.
  • Remove crop residues from the field to reduce the initial inoculum pressure for the next season.
