Description
Udbatta, caused by the fungus Balansia oryzae, is a specialized systemic disease affecting rice crops. The pathogen is categorized as an ascomycete and is known for its ability to significantly impact crop yields in rice-growing regions globally, particularly in areas with humid conditions.
The primary host for this fungus is rice. The infection occurs when the mycelium invades the plant during the early stages of tiller development. By the time the plant reaches the panicle emergence stage, the fungus has completely colonized the tissue, preventing normal grain formation and rendering the panicle infertile.
Symptoms are easily identifiable by the distinct appearance of the infected panicle. It becomes straight, stiff, and coated with a dense white fungal stroma, which eventually turns black as the spores mature. This unique elongated, stick-like appearance is the origin of the disease's name, derived from the Sanskrit word for incense sticks.
The spread of the pathogen is facilitated by the use of infected seeds and the survival of fungal sclerotia in soil or plant debris. High humidity and moderate temperatures during the boot stage are critical environmental factors that trigger the development and dispersal of the infection throughout the field.
Management and prevention focus primarily on cultural and chemical strategies. Farmers are advised to use disease-free seeds and implement effective seed treatments with systemic fungicides. Furthermore, sanitation practices, such as the removal of infected plants and crop rotation, are essential to break the infection cycle and protect future harvests.
