Description
Systematic position and nature of the pathogen. Ephelis oryzae is a fungal pathogen classified within the family Clavicipitaceae. It represents the asexual (anamorphic) stage of the ascomycete fungus Balansia oryzae. This pathogen is a host-specific organism primarily known for its destructive impact on rice production in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide.
Diseases and host plants. The fungus is responsible for a condition commonly known as "rice choke" or "false smut" (in some local contexts). The infection targets the reproductive structures of the plant. While the primary host is cultivated rice (Oryza sativa), the fungus is also known to infect various wild grasses that serve as alternative hosts, maintaining the inoculum in the environment.
Biology and life cycle. The life cycle begins when fungal spores penetrate the developing panicle primordia during the early growth stages of the rice plant. As the panicle elongates, the fungus develops a thick, white-to-grey stroma that ensheathes the developing flower parts. This stroma physically obstructs the emergence of the panicle, effectively choking the plant and preventing seed formation.
Conditions for development and harmfulness. Disease development is highly favored by high humidity, prolonged rainfall, and moderate temperatures during the boot stage of the rice plant. The economic damage is severe, as the infection renders affected panicles completely sterile. In areas with high disease pressure, total loss of the yield on infected tillers can significantly reduce the overall harvest quality and volume.
Control and management measures. Managing Ephelis oryzae requires an integrated approach that combines preventive and chemical strategies.
- Use of certified, pathogen-free seeds for planting.
- Sanitation practices, including the removal and destruction of crop residues post-harvest.
- Application of systemic fungicides during the early booting stage.
- Crop rotation to reduce the primary inoculum level in the soil.
- Strict weed control in and around the rice fields to eliminate alternative hosts.
