Ephelis pallida is a parasitic ascomycete fungus that serves as a specialized plant pathogen. It is primarily known for causing a disease commonly referred to as "choking" or "false smut" in various cereal crops, particularly rice. By infecting the apical meristem, the fungus drastically alters the development of the reproductive organs of the host plant.
The primary symptom of the disease is the inhibition of the panicle emergence. The mycelium of the fungus develops within the leaf sheath, physically preventing the head from emerging. As a result, the panicle becomes trapped, deformed, and turns a pale or whitish color. This infection prevents grain filling entirely, resulting in significant yield losses and often rendering the affected tillers completely sterile.
The life cycle of Ephelis pallida is systemic. The pathogen typically enters the plant at an early developmental stage and colonizes the stem tissues. The spread of the disease occurs primarily through conidia, which are disseminated by wind and rain splashes. The fungus can survive in crop debris and infected seeds, which serve as the primary inoculum for the next growing season.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the severity of the disease. High humidity levels, coupled with warm temperatures during the booting and heading stages of the host, create a favorable environment for the proliferation of the fungus. Fields with poor drainage and high plant density are particularly susceptible to rapid disease spread during the peak growth period.

- Rotation of crops to break the life cycle of the pathogen.
- Deep plowing to bury infected plant residues and prevent sporulation.
