A systemic solution based on imidazolinones for the reliable protection of herbicide-tolerant sunflower hybrids.
Description
Imidazoline Synergy: The Mechanism of Action
The efficacy of the Clearfield sunflower protection system relies heavily on the balanced combination of two active ingredients in Kaptor, RC. Imazamox (33 g/l) and Imazapir (15 g/l) function by inhibiting the acetolactate synthase (ALS) enzyme. This is a critical enzyme responsible for the synthesis of essential amino acids; without these, weed cell division and growth are permanently halted.
The technical precision of this herbicide stems from its systemic nature. Once applied to the leaf surface, the active ingredients are rapidly translocated to the meristematic tissues of the plant. Imazapir ensures rapid "stop-growth" action, while Imazamox solidifies the effect by preventing metabolic recovery. This synergy allows for the effective control of a broad spectrum of broad-leaved and certain grass weeds, including common ragweed, lamb's quarters, pigweed, and cleavers.
Application and Regulatory Guidelines
The water-suspension concentrate formulation ensures optimal wetting of the leaf surface and rapid penetration into the plant structure. Kaptor is a post-emergence herbicide and must be applied strictly to the actively growing crop.
- Application rate: 1–1.2 l/ha achieves maximum herbicidal impact while optimizing the chemical load on the soil.
- Selectivity: Kaptor works selectively, targeting weeds while allowing imidazolinone-resistant sunflower hybrids to continue their development without phytotoxic stress.
- Restrictions: Limited to 1 application per season. When planning crop rotation, it is essential to consider the residual soil activity of imidazolinones, particularly Imazapir, which may influence the timing for subsequent sensitive crops.
Produced by BASF Agro B.V. across facilities in France, the USA, Italy, and Germany, Kaptor meets stringent international quality standards. It remains a reliable tool for commercial growers prioritizing clean fields and stable yields under high weed-pressure conditions.

Depending on their ability to move through living tissues, herbicides are divided into contact and systemic. Contact herbicides cause local damage to plant tissue upon contact, which dies or gradually degrades. This action does not always completely destroy the plant; often, its... |

Herbicides are classified according to application timing into pre-emergent and post-emergent herbicides. Pre-emergent herbicides are mostly soil-applied or granular formulations applied before the emergence of crop plants. They are applied either pre-sowing (during pre-sowing cu... |
