Reliable contact protection for onion and garlic crops against a wide range of broad-leaved weeds.
Description
Mechanism of Action and Selectivity
Totril 225 EC is based on the active ingredient ioxynil-octanoate, belonging to the nitrile chemical class. Unlike systemic products, this herbicide is strictly contact-based. Its primary technical function is to block the photosynthesis process (Hill reaction) directly within the weed tissues. Upon contact with the leaves, it causes rapid destruction of chloroplasts, leading to the irreversible wilting of broad-leaved weeds.
Why This Matters for Onions and Garlic
The main advantage of Totril 225 EC lies in its high selectivity. Crop plants such as onions and garlic possess specific physiological defenses: their leaves are covered with a thick waxy layer and maintain a vertical orientation, minimizing the surface area that retains the spray solution. Meanwhile, weeds (especially common lambsquarters) have broad leaf surfaces that absorb the product intensively. This allows for 'rescue' applications during the post-emergence period, when weeds are most vulnerable, without damaging the crop.
Technical Application Regulations
- Application Timing: The product is applied to actively growing weeds, optimally at the 2–4 leaf stage. At this time, onions should be in the 2nd true leaf phase.
- Application Rates: Depending on the species composition and growth stage of the weeds, the dosage varies from 1.0 to 3.0 L/ha. The maximum number of applications per season is limited to two, ensuring control over new 'flushes' of weeds without excessive accumulation of active substances in the soil.
- Technology: Since it is a contact herbicide, coverage uniformity is the key factor for efficiency. Application at air temperatures between +10°C and +25°C ensures optimal penetration of the active ingredient.
The emulsifiable concentrate formulation ensures the stability of the working solution and a high degree of leaf surface adhesion, which is critical for contact action under variable weather conditions.

Depending on their ability to move through living tissues, herbicides are divided into contact and systemic. Contact herbicides cause local damage to plant tissue upon contact, which dies or gradually degrades. This action does not always completely destroy the plant; often, its... |
