Why Tanaris is essential for winter rapeseed

When you are managing winter rapeseed, the first weeks are critical. Weed pressure can easily ruin the crop before it even establishes. Tanaris has become my go-to choice for a reliable pre-emergence shield. It is a selective, systemic herbicide that targets tough weeds like common lambsquarters, pigweed, shepherd's purse, and cleavers without compromising the crop itself.

Operating and Performance

The active ingredient, Dimethenamid-P, provides a durable barrier in the top layer of the soil. When I am applying it, I follow a strict rate of 2–2.5 L/ha. In my experience, cutting corners here is a mistake—you need that full coverage to create a consistent 'protection zone' for the seeds.

• Application timing: strictly pre-emergence. This is a soil-active product, not a post-emergence weed killer.
• Usage: once per season, which is perfectly sufficient to control the first weed wave.
• Ease of use: The emulsifiable concentrate formulation is easy to handle. It mixes well in the tank and doesn't clog the sprayer nozzles, which saves valuable time in the field during busy days.

With a chemical product, stability is everything. Since Tanaris is manufactured by BASF Agro B.V. across their facilities in France, the USA, Italy, and Germany, I don't have to worry about batch-to-batch inconsistencies. It performs as expected every time.

A practical tip for operators: keep in mind that like any soil-applied herbicide, Tanaris needs moisture to activate. Working on dry, dusty soil is a waste of resources. I always aim for application when there is decent soil moisture or a light rain is expected shortly after. It is a simple, effective way to ensure the crop gets off to a clean, competitive start.
