Surprise

The winter triticale variety «Surprise» is a hexaploid plant with a semi-erect bush and a height of up to 80 cm. The ear is white, cylindrical, of medium length and density, fully awned with short-to-medium awns. It has a very early heading time, which allows the variety to successfully adapt to the Central Volga and Western Siberia regions. The vegetation period ranges from 234 to 290 days, and the 1000-grain mass varies between 28.0-46.0 g, indicating large grains with high threshability. The variety is characterized by high yield: in the Central Volga region, it averages 33.3 c/ha, which is 6.6% higher than the standard, and in the Western Siberia region, it reaches 39.1 c/ha. The maximum grain yield indicators were recorded at 55.3 c/ha in the Ulyanovsk region and 63.7 c/ha in the Novosibirsk region. Additionally, the variety is resistant to shattering and lodging, which ensures crop preservation and facilitates harvesting. Winter hardiness is at the level of standards, making the variety reliable for cultivation in the specified regions. «Surprise» possesses high resistance to major diseases, including bunt, powdery mildew, Fusarium ear blight, septoria, snow mold, and brown rust. The variety is intended for grain use, including the production of grain silage, ethanol, and beer. A feature of its agronomy is the high threshability of the grain and significant protein collection per unit area, reaching up to 18 c/ha, which enhances its value for feed and industrial purposes.
