It is recognized as a significant agent causing rust-like symptoms on various ornamental bellflower species.

The disease caused by this pathogen manifests as the development of aecidia—small, cup-shaped structures usually found on the underside of leaves or on succulent stems. These structures release masses of bright orange or yellow aecidiospores. This process severely disrupts the plant's metabolic functions, leading to reduced photosynthetic capacity and stunted growth, which significantly diminishes the aesthetic and biological value of the plant.

The life cycle of Aecidium campanulastri is primarily driven by the availability of the host plant and specific environmental cues. The fungus infiltrates the host tissues through stomata, developing a mycelial network that draws nutrients directly from the host cells.
