Alternaria citrullicola

Alternaria citrullicola is a phytopathogenic fungus belonging to the genus Alternaria within the Kingdom Fungi. This species acts as a specific causal agent of alternaria blight, a destructive fungal disease primarily affecting cucurbit crops. The pathogen is characterized by its dark, multicellular conidia that enable it to persist in various environmental conditions and spread rapidly across agricultural fields.

The fungus predominantly targets watermelons, melons, and other cucurbits. The disease manifests as necrotic leaf spots, stem lesions, and fruit rot. These spots are typically dark brown or black with concentric rings. Severe infection leads to significant defoliation, which reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, resulting in premature senescence, stunted fruit development, and massive yield losses.

The life cycle of Alternaria citrullicola involves overwintering as mycelium or chlamydospores within infected plant debris or in the soil. Once environmental conditions become favorable during the growing season, the fungus produces conidia. These spores are disseminated via wind currents, rain splashes, or contaminated irrigation water, initiating new infection cycles on healthy plant tissues.

The development and spread of the pathogen are highly favored by high relative humidity (above 80%) and warm temperatures, generally between 20°C and 28°C. Prolonged leaf wetness caused by dew or frequent rainfall is a critical factor that facilitates spore germination and tissue penetration, making the crop particularly susceptible during humid summer months.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to plant protection. Cultural practices, such as crop rotation, selecting resistant cultivars, and rigorous field sanitation (removing and destroying crop residues), are essential to reduce initial inoculum levels. Chemical control involves the timely application of fungicides, such as strobilurins or triazoles, especially when weather conditions are conducive to disease outbreak.
