Alternaria cucumerina belongs to the kingdom Fungi and the genus Alternaria. It is a specialized fungal pathogen responsible for Alternaria leaf blight in various cucurbit crops, including cucumbers, melons, watermelons, squashes, and pumpkins. This pathogen can cause significant economic losses in both open-field and greenhouse production systems.

The primary symptoms manifest as small, circular spots on the leaves, which gradually expand and exhibit characteristic concentric rings. Under high humidity, these spots develop a dark olive-colored velvet-like layer of conidia. Severe infections cause the lesions to merge, leading to extensive leaf necrosis, premature defoliation, and significant reduction in the plant's photosynthetic capacity.

The disease cycle involves the pathogen overwintering as mycelium or conidia within crop debris and soil. During the growing season, conidia are disseminated primarily by wind, splashing rain, or overhead irrigation. The fungus invades plant tissues through stomata or physical wounds, rapidly colonizing the host when environmental conditions are conducive to fungal growth.

Disease development is highly dependent on warm and humid weather conditions, with frequent rainfall or heavy dew. Temperatures ranging from +20°C to +28°C are optimal for spore germination and lesion expansion. While dry weather slows the infection rate, the pathogen remains highly persistent in the soil, ensuring its presence for subsequent cropping seasons.

The economic impact of Alternaria cucumerina includes reduced yields, smaller fruit size, and compromised fruit quality. Effective control requires an integrated approach to disease management:

  • Implementing a strict crop rotation of at least 3-4 years to break the infection cycle.
  • Prompt removal and destruction of crop residues to reduce the initial inoculum.
  • Choosing resistant or tolerant cultivars when available.
  • Applying preventative or curative fungicides, such as strobilurins and triazoles, during peak risk periods.
  • Improving canopy airflow and minimizing overhead irrigation to maintain drier leaf surfaces.
