Alternaria leaf spot of sunflower
Alternaria helianthii
Description
Systematic position and pathogen type: Alternaria helianthii is a mitosporic fungus belonging to the Ascomycota division and Pleosporales order. It is a highly specialized phytopathogen that causes significant damage specifically to sunflower crops (Helianthus annuus).
Diseases and host plants: The pathogen induces Alternaria leaf spot, which is a major fungal disease of sunflowers. It affects all aerial parts of the plant, including cotyledons, leaves, stems, petioles, and floral heads. If left untreated, the disease can devastate sunflower fields during favorable climatic conditions.
Biology and life cycle: The fungus survives the winter as mycelium and conidia on infected crop residues in the soil or on contaminated seeds. When environmental conditions become favorable, the conidia are dispersed by wind, rain splashes, or insects. The pathogen enters the host through stomata or mechanical injuries, establishing a parasitic relationship that leads to tissue necrosis.
Developmental conditions and impact: Disease development is favored by high humidity (relative humidity above 80%) and warm temperatures ranging between 25°C and 30°C. The damage is characterized by the rapid formation of brown, necrotic spots, which eventually coalesce. This causes premature defoliation, restricted photosynthesis, reduced seed set, and significant loss in overall oil content and yield.
Protection and control measures: Management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. This includes planting resistant hybrids, implementing crop rotation (at least 3-4 years gap), and thorough burial of infected plant debris. Chemical control is crucial and involves using effective seed treatments and timely application of foliar fungicides, specifically those containing strobilurins or triazoles, during the growing season.
- Selecting certified, treated seeds.
- Controlling volunteer sunflowers and weeds.
- Optimizing plant density for better aeration.
- Monitoring fields during high humidity periods.
