It is recognized as the primary causative agent of Alternaria blight in flax (Linum usitatissimum). This pathogen affects the crop throughout its entire growth cycle, causing substantial economic losses in both fiber and oilseed production.

The symptoms of this disease include the formation of dark brown or black lesions on cotyledons, leaves, and stems. Under high humidity, these lesions become covered with a velvety, olive-black mass of fungal spores. The disease is particularly damaging during the seedling stage, where it often leads to "damping-off," resulting in a significant reduction in plant density.

The biology of Alternaria linicola is centered on its ability to survive in both infected seeds and crop debris. The fungus maintains its viability through mycelium and conidia, which can persist in the soil or within the seed coat for extended periods. During the growing season, spores are disseminated by wind, water splashes, and insects, allowing the pathogen to spread rapidly across fields.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the severity of the infection. The pathogen thrives in warm conditions with temperatures ranging from 18°C to 25°C and high relative humidity. Prolonged rainfall during the flowering and boll maturation stages significantly accelerates the development of the disease, leading to lower seed quality and reduced oil content.

Effective management of the disease requires an integrated plant protection strategy. Key measures include:

  • Utilizing clean, disease-free certified seeds.
  • Applying systemic fungicides as seed treatments prior to planting.
  • Implementing long-term crop rotation schemes to break the pathogen's lifecycle.
  • Managing crop residues through deep tillage to minimize the primary inoculum source.
