Alternaria padwickii

Alternaria padwickii

Description

Alternaria padwickii is a pathogenic fungus belonging to the Kingdom Fungi, within the genus Alternaria. It is recognized as the causal agent of the stackburn disease or grain discoloration in rice crops. This phytopathogen is of significant economic concern, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions where rice cultivation is intensive and environmental conditions favor fungal growth.

The primary host for this fungus is rice (Oryza sativa). The infection typically affects the grains, manifesting as irregular spots with varying colors, ranging from pinkish to dark brown. The fungus invades the pericarp and the endosperm of the rice kernels. Beyond rice, Alternaria padwickii can persist on various weed species and alternative grass hosts, ensuring its survival even when primary crop rotation is practiced.

The life cycle of Alternaria padwickii begins with the pathogen overwintering as mycelium or chlamydospores in infested seeds and crop residues left in the soil. During the growing season, conidia are produced and disseminated through wind, rain splashes, and irrigation water. The fungus readily colonizes the rice panicles during the anthesis and grain-filling stages when moisture is abundant.

Environmental conditions play a decisive role in the development and severity of the disease. High relative humidity (often exceeding 85%) and warm temperatures between 25°C and 30°C provide the optimal setting for spore germination and mycelial spread. Poor field sanitation and dense planting density further exacerbate the infection, allowing the disease to progress rapidly through the field.

The economic impact of the pathogen includes significant losses in germination rates, lower seedling vigor, and decreased milling quality of the harvested rice. Severely infected grains become chalky and brittle, leading to lower market value. Management strategies emphasize the use of high-quality, fungicide-treated certified seeds, effective post-harvest residue destruction, and integrated pest management (IPM) practices to prevent outbreaks.
