Alternaria raphani is a pathogenic fungus within the genus Alternaria that acts as the primary causative agent for leaf spot diseases in various brassica crops. It is taxonomically classified under the Fungi kingdom and is a significant threat to production efficiency in cabbage, radishes, canola, and mustard.

The disease primarily manifests as circular to irregular dark brown lesions, often featuring concentric rings, which can appear on cotyledons, stems, leaves, and siliques. In severe cases, the infection causes seed discoloration and reduced germination potential, leading to compromised seedling health and overall stand density.

The lifecycle of the pathogen involves the survival of conidia and mycelium on infested plant debris, within the soil, or on the surface of seeds. Under humid conditions, conidia are dispersed via wind, water splashes, and farm equipment. Once on a susceptible host, the fungus penetrates the tissue through stomata or directly through the cuticle.

Favorable conditions for the spread of Alternaria raphani include high relative humidity (above 85%) and moderate temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C. These conditions trigger rapid sporulation, allowing the pathogen to complete its lifecycle quickly and propagate secondary infections throughout the field during the growing season.

Management of this pathogen requires an integrated approach to minimize crop loss. Key strategies include using high-quality, treated certified seeds to eliminate initial inoculum, practicing crop rotation to break the survival cycle, and removing host weeds from the Brassicaceae family. Additionally, the strategic application of fungicides, such as triazoles or strobilurins, during the vegetative stages is essential for effective disease control.
