The primary host for this fungus is the sow thistle (Sonchus species). The infection results in a condition commonly referred to as Alternaria leaf spot. Symptoms initially appear as small chlorotic or dark spots on the foliage, which eventually expand into necrotic lesions, often characterized by concentric rings that signify the progressive growth of the fungus.

The life cycle of the pathogen is driven by the production of conidia, which serve as the primary inoculum. These spores are disseminated across fields via wind currents, splashing rain droplets, and agricultural equipment. Upon landing on a suitable host surface, the conidia germinate, penetrate the plant epidermis, and establish a mycelial network that feeds on the host tissue.

Environmental conditions play a pivotal role in the proliferation of this pathogen. High relative humidity and warm temperatures (typically ranging between 20°C and 25°C) are optimal for spore germination and lesion expansion. Prolonged moisture on leaf surfaces is essential for the pathogen to successfully breach the plant's natural defenses.

The economic impact is primarily observed through reduced photosynthetic capacity and the premature death of foliage, which weakens the plant significantly. Control measures include:

  • Removal and destruction of infected plant debris.
  • Implementation of appropriate crop rotation cycles.
  • Application of broad-spectrum or systemic fungicides when symptoms appear.
  • Ensuring proper spacing to facilitate air circulation and reduce leaf wetness.
