Alternaria spinaciae is a specialized phytopathogenic fungus belonging to the kingdom Fungi and the genus Alternaria. It is the primary causal agent of Alternaria leaf spot in spinach (Spinacia oleracea). This pathogen is particularly problematic in areas with high humidity, significantly affecting both field-grown and greenhouse spinach crops.

The disease manifests as characteristic leaf spots, which initially appear as small, circular, or irregular brown lesions. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, often turning dark brown to black in color. Under favorable moist conditions, the lesions produce a visible, dark-olive to black velvety mold, which represents the masses of conidia (spores) produced by the fungus.

The life cycle of Alternaria spinaciae involves overwintering on infested crop debris, in the soil, or on contaminated seed surfaces. Primary inoculum is disseminated by wind, splashing rain, or overhead irrigation. The fungus thrives in moderate temperature conditions, typically between 20°C and 25°C, coupled with high relative humidity or prolonged leaf wetness, which are essential for infection.

The economic impact of this disease is significant, primarily due to the loss of marketable yield and quality. Since spinach is consumed as a fresh leafy vegetable, any visual damage or necrotic tissue renders the crop unsuitable for sale. Heavy infestations can lead to premature leaf senescence and, in severe cases, the complete collapse of the spinach stand during the growing season.

  • Use certified, pathogen-free seeds for planting.
  • Implement proper irrigation management to minimize leaf wetness duration.
  • Ensure adequate plant spacing to promote airflow and lower humidity.

It is critical to follow local regulatory guidelines regarding the use of chemical controls on leafy vegetables, ensuring that pre-harvest intervals are strictly observed to maintain food safety standards.
