It is a specialized necrotrophic fungus responsible for the devastating sunflower disease known as Alternaria leaf spot, which is widespread in major sunflower-growing regions worldwide.

Diseases and host plants: The pathogen specifically infects cultivated sunflower (Helianthus annuus) and several wild relatives. Symptoms typically appear as small, dark brown spots on leaves, which gradually expand into irregular necrotic lesions. Infections can also affect petioles, stems, and heads, causing significant structural damage to the plants.

Biology and life cycle: The fungus overwinters as mycelium or conidia on infected crop residues in the soil or on seeds. During the growing season, moisture and warm temperatures trigger the production of new conidia. These spores are dispersed by wind, rain splashes, and insects, allowing the fungus to rapidly spread through the sunflower field.

Conditions for development and impact: High relative humidity and temperatures ranging from 20 °C to 28 °C are ideal for the disease to flourish. The impact of the pathogen is severe: it reduces the photosynthetic capacity of the plants, leading to premature leaf drop, stunted head development, reduced seed filling, and significant losses in both grain yield and oil quality.

Key strategies include the use of disease-resistant hybrids, long-term crop rotation to reduce inoculum buildup, and proper management of crop debris. Foliar application of fungicides, such as strobilurins or triazoles, is recommended when environmental conditions favor disease development.
