Description

Apiognomonia veneta is an ascomycete fungus that acts as the primary pathogen of sycamore anthracnose, a severe disease affecting various Platanus species. This phytopathogen is widely distributed in regions where sycamores are cultivated, and its ability to survive in both dead leaf tissue and woody stems makes it a persistent threat to ornamental tree health.

The infection manifests early in the spring, causing dark, irregular lesions on leaves that typically follow the leaf veins. As the disease progresses, it moves into twigs and branches, leading to cankers and dieback. In severe cases, the tree may lose most of its foliage early in the season, resulting in a stunted appearance and reduced photosynthetic capacity.

The life cycle of the pathogen is closely tied to seasonal changes. The fungus overwinters primarily as mycelium and fruiting bodies (perithecia) on fallen leaves and infected twigs left on the tree. During the spring, when temperatures rise and moisture levels are high, spores are released and disseminated by wind and splashing rain onto susceptible new growth.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development and spread of this disease. Cool, wet springs create the perfect climate for spore germination and rapid infection of tender young foliage. Conversely, dry and hot summers tend to inhibit the spread of the fungus, allowing the tree to produce a second flush of leaves, although the tree remains physiologically stressed.

Effective management strategies against this pathogen involve an integrated approach:

  • Rigorous sanitation, including the collection and destruction of all fallen foliage.
  • Pruning out dead and cankered branches to reduce local inoculum.
  • Applying protective copper-based fungicides when buds begin to swell.
  • Ensuring proper tree vigor through adequate irrigation and nutrient management to withstand recurring infections.
