Description

Gallic honey fungus (lat. Armillaria gallica) belongs to the kingdom Fungi and is a well-known plant pathogen. It acts as a facultative parasite, causing root rot in a wide range of woody hosts. Unlike more aggressive relatives, it often colonizes trees that have been previously weakened by environmental stress or secondary pests.

The fungus is responsible for white root rot, which destroys the root system and the base of the trunk. Affected trees often show signs of decline such as chlorosis, crown thinning, and reduced annual growth. As the root system disintegrates, the trees lose their anchoring stability, leading to "windthrow," where the tree falls over during strong winds due to compromised root integrity.

The biology of the fungus is characterized by the production of rhizomorphs—black, cord-like structures that travel through the soil to locate and infect neighboring healthy roots. During the autumn months, the fungus produces clusters of gilled mushrooms at the base of infected wood. These mushrooms release spores, which facilitate the long-distance spread of the fungus to other locations.

Environmental conditions that favor the spread of Armillaria gallica include high soil moisture, temperate climates, and an abundance of woody debris. Since it can persist as a saprotroph on dead root systems for many years, it remains a permanent threat in sites where infected trees were removed but root systems were left to decay in the soil.

The impact of this pathogen on forestry and orchard management is significant, leading to severe economic losses. Protection and control strategies should prioritize:

  • The complete removal of stumps and roots from infested areas.
  • Creating physical barriers to prevent rhizomorph spread.
  • The application of biological control agents, such as beneficial fungi.
  • Improving overall tree health to enhance natural resistance against infection.
