Description
Armillaria root rot, caused by the fungus Armillaria mellea, is a devastating soil-borne disease affecting a wide range of woody plants. Often referred to as "honey fungus," it is a significant agricultural pathogen that thrives by decomposing wood and attacking the living root systems of susceptible hosts.
The fungus spreads through rhizomorphs, which are dark, root-like structures that grow through the soil. These rhizomorphs enable the pathogen to invade host roots and colonize the cambium layer. By destroying the conductive tissues of the plant, the fungus effectively starves the tree or shrub of water and nutrients, leading to rapid decline.
The host range is diverse, encompassing essential crops and ornamentals. Notable plants susceptible to this infection include Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora, common hop (Humulus lupulus), walnut (Juglans regia), cassava (Manihot esculenta), Fuchsia, Pelargonium (geranium), and Sweet Gum (Liquidambar styraciflua).
Early symptoms are often non-specific, including leaf chlorosis, thinning of the canopy, and reduced growth. A definitive diagnosis can be made by looking under the bark at the root collar, where thick, white, fan-shaped mats of mycelium are typically present. In late autumn, clusters of honey-colored mushrooms may appear at the base of the infected plant.
Control strategies require an integrated approach. Prevention is the primary goal, as there are no simple chemical cures for established infections. Best practices include removing stumps and infected root systems from the field, maintaining optimal plant health through balanced fertilization, avoiding poor soil drainage, and using root-stock varieties that demonstrate higher resistance to fungal pathogens.
