Lupine ascochyta blight

Ascochyta tarda is a fungal phytopathogen belonging to the genus Ascochyta within the Ascomycota phylum. This fungus is specifically adapted to parasitize leguminous plants, with a primary focus on lupine species (Lupinus spp.). As a serious disease-causing agent, it can devastate lupine fields if environmental conditions favor its rapid spread.

The disease, commonly known as ascochyta blight, manifests as irregular dark spots or lesions appearing on leaves, stems, and pods. These necrotic areas eventually develop pycnidia—small, black, fruiting bodies that are diagnostic of this fungal infection. Stem girdling caused by these lesions often leads to lodging and poor plant development, resulting in significant losses in both biomass production and seed quality.

The life cycle of Ascochyta tarda relies on survival via pycnidia and mycelia embedded in crop residues left in the soil or carried within infected seeds. During the growing season, pycnidia release conidia when exposed to moisture. These spores are disseminated primarily through rain splash or wind currents, allowing the pathogen to move from debris or lower leaves to the upper canopy of the plant.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the severity of the outbreak. High humidity levels, combined with temperatures ranging from 18°C to 25°C, are optimal for spore germination and infection. Field conditions that promote high canopy humidity, such as high plant density or poor drainage, significantly increase the risk of rapid disease progression throughout the cropping season.

Economic losses associated with this pathogen include reduced photosynthetic capacity and crop failure in severe cases. Effective management requires an integrated approach:

• Planting certified, disease-free seed to prevent the introduction of primary inoculum.
• Implementing long-term crop rotation schemes to break the pathogen's life cycle.
• Deep burial of crop residues to reduce the survival of pycnidia.
• Proactive application of foliar fungicides when weather conditions become conducive to the disease.
