Ascochyta blight of doronicum

Ascochyta doronici

Description

Ascochyta doronici is a pathogenic fungus that causes a specific form of leaf blight on plants belonging to the genus Doronicum. As an ascomycete fungus, it spreads through the production of pycnidiospores, which are contained within microscopic fruiting bodies known as pycnidia. This pathogen is highly specific to its host, leading to significant foliage damage in ornamental gardening.

Symptoms of the infection typically appear as irregular or circular necrotic spots on the leaves. These spots usually feature a dark brown margin with a lighter center. As the fungus matures, numerous dark-colored pycnidia develop within the dead tissue. Severe infections cause the foliage to wilt, turn brown, and eventually wither, which can weaken the entire plant if left untreated over several seasons.

The life cycle of the pathogen is centered on its ability to survive in plant debris. The fungus overwinters in the form of pycnidia or mycelium within fallen leaves and stems. During the spring, when temperatures rise and rainfall increases, the spores are released from the pycnidia. They are disseminated primarily by splashing water, rain droplets, and wind, landing on susceptible host tissues to initiate new infections.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the severity of the disease. High humidity, frequent rainfall, and stagnant air around the plants are primary drivers for the rapid spread of Ascochyta doronici. Dense canopy structures or improper spacing in flower beds prevent the foliage from drying quickly after rain, which creates the perfect microclimate for fungal proliferation.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to sanitation and chemical control. Growers should prioritize the removal of all infected plant parts during the autumn and spring seasons to reduce the primary inoculum level. Fungicide applications, particularly those containing protective or systemic agents, are recommended during periods of high humidity if symptoms persist to protect the emerging healthy foliage.
