Ascochyta humuli is a specialized fungal plant pathogen classified within the kingdom Fungi and the genus Ascochyta. This pathogen is the causal agent of ascochyta blight in hop plants (Humulus lupulus). It specifically targets the vegetative parts of the plant, leading to necrosis that hinders the photosynthetic capacity and overall vigor of the hop vines.
The disease is characterized by the appearance of circular or irregular spots on leaves, which develop lighter centers with darker margins as the tissue dies. Within these necrotic areas, the fungus produces pycnidia — small, flask-shaped structures that contain spores. Severe infections result in widespread leaf necrosis and premature abscission, which compromises the plant’s health during the critical peak growth stage.
The life cycle of the pathogen centers on its ability to overwinter as mycelium or pycnidia on crop debris and in the soil. As environmental conditions become warm and humid during the spring, the fungus releases conidia that are disseminated to healthy tissue through rain splash or wind currents. High humidity and moderate temperatures provide the optimal environment for infection and disease spread.
The economic impact of hop ascochyta blight is significant, as it leads to a reduction in leaf surface area, which directly limits the synthesis of essential compounds required for hop cone development. This reduces both the yield and the quality of the harvested cones. In extreme cases, the overall structural integrity of the vine can be affected, hindering long-term plantation productivity.
