Ascochyta pinodella (syn. Phoma medicaginis var. pinodella) is a destructive fungal pathogen within the Ascomycota division. It is a key agent responsible for ascochyta blight in various legume species. As a soil-borne and seed-borne fungus, it represents a significant challenge to pulse production worldwide, causing extensive tissue damage to the host plant.

Host plants and associated diseases
This pathogen primarily infects field peas, lentils, and vetches. It is associated with foot rot, stem rot, and leaf spotting. Unlike some other Ascochyta species that mainly affect foliage, Ascochyta pinodella is particularly aggressive toward the lower stem and roots, frequently causing basal rot that leads to early plant lodging and seedling mortality.

Biology and lifecycle
The fungus survives in infected crop debris buried in the soil or within the seed coat. During the growing season, in the presence of moisture, the fungus produces pycnidia—small fruiting bodies containing spores. These spores are splashed onto healthy plant tissues by rainfall, initiating new infection cycles. The cycle repeats rapidly under favorable environmental conditions throughout the growing season.

Developmental conditions and impact
High humidity and moderate temperatures are the most critical factors for the rapid spread of the disease. The economic impact is profound: the infection reduces the photosynthetic area of leaves, restricts nutrient transport through the stems, and directly damages the seeds within the pods. This leads to substantial yield losses, reduced seed size, and poorer quality, often resulting in complete crop failure in severe epidemic years.

Control and management measures

  • Planting certified disease-free seeds to prevent initial field contamination.
  • Implementing long crop rotations, ideally waiting at least 3-4 years before planting legumes on the same field.
  • Using deep plowing techniques to bury crop residues and promote their decay.
  • Applying registered fungicide seed treatments to protect the germinating seeds.
  • Timely foliar application of fungicides when weather conditions are conducive to disease development.
