Yellow mold (Aspergillus flavus) is a prominent saprophytic fungus belonging to the kingdom Fungi, phylum Ascomycota, and genus Aspergillus. This widespread soil-borne pathogen is recognized globally for its role in destroying stored grain and infecting living crops in the field.

The fungus is a primary cause of grain mold, ear rot in maize, and seed spoilage in peanuts, cotton, and various oilseeds. Beyond the physical destruction of plant tissues, Aspergillus flavus is notorious for producing aflatoxins. These secondary metabolites are potent carcinogens that represent a significant food safety hazard, leading to economic losses and potential health crises.

The life cycle of the fungus is characterized by the production of abundant asexual spores, known as conidia. These spores are highly resistant to environmental stress and are easily dispersed by wind, irrigation water, and insects. In the soil, the fungus functions as a saprophyte, surviving on decaying organic matter until environmental conditions become favorable for infection.

Developmental factors for Aspergillus flavus include warm temperatures (typically between 25°C and 37°C) and high moisture levels. In agricultural settings, the pathogen thrives when humidity levels in storage facilities rise or when crops are subjected to drought stress in the field, which weakens their natural defense mechanisms.

Management and control strategies focus on prevention:

  • Harvesting crops at the appropriate moisture level to prevent fungal growth.
  • Drying grain thoroughly before storage to prevent self-heating and mold proliferation.
  • Utilizing insect pest control to minimize mechanical damage to seeds.
  • Cleaning storage facilities regularly to eliminate inoculum sources.
  • Applying registered antifungal treatments to seeds before planting to protect germination.
