Description
The causal agent of Cercospora leaf spot is the fungus Cercospora beticola, which belongs to the kingdom Fungi and the phylum Ascomycota. It is a highly specialized pathogen that primarily targets species within the Amaranthaceae family, with sugar beet, fodder beet, and table beet being the most economically significant hosts.
The disease is characterized by the formation of numerous small, circular, or sub-circular spots on the leaves. These spots typically feature a light grey or tan center surrounded by a dark brown or reddish-purple halo. Under high humidity conditions, a dusty grey layer of fungal conidia develops in the center of these lesions, which serves as a primary source of secondary infection throughout the growing season.
The development and spread of the pathogen are driven by warm temperatures and high relative humidity. The fungus overwinters as stroma on infected crop debris in the soil. During spring and summer, when temperatures exceed 15–20°C and leaf wetness persists for several hours, conidia are produced and disseminated by rain splashes, wind, or mechanical equipment to healthy foliage.
The economic impact of the disease is significant, as it leads to premature leaf senescence and death. In severe outbreaks, the plant is forced to produce new leaves, which consumes accumulated carbohydrates, directly reducing root yield and sucrose concentration. Yield losses can exceed 40-50% in untreated fields during high-pressure seasons.
Integrated pest management is essential for successful control. Farmers should utilize crop rotation, deep plowing to bury infested residues, and plant resistant varieties where possible. Fungicide applications remain the primary control method, with a focus on rotation of systemic and contact active ingredients to mitigate the risk of resistance development in fungal populations.
