The disease manifests as dark, sunken lesions on the epidermis of the cactus stems. These spots expand rapidly under favorable conditions, eventually leading to tissue collapse. As the fungal mycelium penetrates deeper into the cortical tissue, the plant loses its structural integrity, leading to systemic decay and potential death if the infection is not addressed immediately.
The life cycle of Bipolaris cactivora revolves around the production of conidia. These spores are disseminated primarily via water splashes, contaminated tools, or infested planting media. Once the spores land on a host, they germinate under high humidity, allowing the hyphae to penetrate the plant tissue through natural openings or small wounds in the skin.
