Bipolaris sorghicola

Bipolaris sorghicola

Description

Systematic position: Bipolaris sorghicola is a plant pathogenic fungus belonging to the phylum Ascomycota. It is a well-known causal agent of severe leaf diseases in sorghum species, widely distributed in regions where these crops are cultivated.

Host range and symptoms: The pathogen primarily affects various sorghum cultivars, including grain and forage sorghum. The disease manifests as irregular leaf spots, often bordered by a red or purple margin, which coalesce to cause premature blight and necrotic tissues on leaves and stems.

Biology and life cycle: The fungus overwinters as mycelium or conidia on infected plant debris and in or on seeds. Under favorable conditions, conidia are dispersed by wind, rain splashes, or insects to healthy plant tissues. Upon germination, the fungus penetrates the leaf epidermis, establishing the infection cycle.

Developmental conditions: Development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly humidity. High relative humidity (85%+) and warm temperatures (20–28°C) are conducive to rapid conidial production and dissemination, leading to severe epidemic outbreaks in susceptible crop fields.

Harmfulness and control measures: The disease significantly reduces the yield by hindering photosynthesis and reducing the overall quality of the forage or grain. Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies include the use of disease-resistant hybrids, rigorous sanitation by incorporating crop residues into the soil, balanced fertilization, and seed treatments with effective fungicides.
