Description
Botryotinia fuckeliana (anamorph Botrytis cinerea) is a major fungal pathogen that ranks among the most destructive in agriculture worldwide. As a necrotrophic fungus, it causes gray mold disease, attacking a vast host range of agricultural and horticultural plants, often leading to total loss of fruit and vegetable yields.
The characteristic symptoms of the disease include the appearance of a dusty gray mass of conidiophores and conidia on infected tissues. The pathogen actively secretes enzymes that degrade plant cell walls, causing maceration and soft rot. This leads to the characteristic grayish-brown decay of flowers, fruits, shoots, and leaves, significantly reducing the shelf life of produce.
The life cycle is complex, involving the production of dormant survival structures called sclerotia, which persist in the soil or plant debris. In favorable conditions, these sclerotia produce conidia, which are disseminated by wind and water splash to host tissues. The fungus can also propagate via mycelial spread between adjacent plant tissues in dense canopies.
Environmental conditions are critical for infection; high humidity and temperatures between 15°C and 25°C are optimal for spore germination and colonization. Furthermore, physical damage to plant tissues caused by hail, insects, or pruning creates entry points that significantly increase the susceptibility of the crop to secondary infection by the fungus.
