Description
Botrytis anthophila is a specialized fungal phytopathogen belonging to the genus Botrytis. It is primarily responsible for the disease known as "anther mould" or clover seed sterility. This fungus is highly targeted, focusing its infection mechanisms on the reproductive organs of host plants, which causes significant economic losses for seed producers.
The primary hosts of this pathogen are various species of Trifolium (clover). The infection is visually distinct during the flowering stage: the anthers of infected flowers are transformed into a white, powdery mass consisting entirely of fungal spores. Consequently, the affected flowers become completely sterile, preventing the development of seeds and causing substantial drops in yield.
The life cycle of the pathogen is intrinsically linked to insect pollinators. As bumblebees and other pollinators visit clover blossoms, they pick up the spores from infected plants and distribute them to healthy ones. Once inside the flower, the fungus consumes the pollen-producing tissues. The pathogen typically overwinters as mycelium inside the infected seeds or within plant debris remaining in the field.
Environmental conditions play a critical role in the severity of anther mould outbreaks. Cool, humid weather during the flowering season is ideal for spore production and transmission via insects. If these conditions persist, the incidence of the disease can increase rapidly, especially in fields where clover is grown continuously without proper crop rotation cycles.
Control strategies for Botrytis anthophila must be preventative to be effective. Key management practices include the use of certified, clean seeds and the implementation of strict spatial isolation between seed production fields and forage clover. Deep ploughing of stubble after harvest is essential to reduce the inoculum level in the soil, and monitoring insect activity is crucial for managing the transmission rate of the disease.
