Botrytis tracheiphila

Botrytis tracheiphila

Description

Botrytis tracheiphila, formally identified as Phaeoacremonium tracheiphilum, is a significant fungal plant pathogen belonging to the kingdom Fungi. It is primarily recognized for its role as one of the causative agents of Esca, a devastating vascular disease that affects grapevine wood, leading to substantial economic losses in viticulture worldwide.

The pathogen causes severe disruption of the host plant's vascular system. By colonizing the xylem vessels, the fungus secretes phytotoxins and physical obstructions that prevent the transport of water and nutrients. This results in the characteristic foliar symptoms known as "tiger striping" and the sudden wilting or "apoplexy" of the grapevines during the growing season.

The life cycle of this pathogen is strictly tied to the internal wood tissues of the vine. It acts as an opportunistic parasite, primarily infecting the host through pruning wounds and mechanical damage. Once established, the mycelium spreads systemically throughout the wood, making it extremely difficult to eradicate once the infection has become chronic within the vine structure.

Environmental conditions such as high humidity and optimal temperatures facilitate the production of conidia, which are then dispersed by wind and rain splash. Furthermore, human activity, specifically the use of contaminated pruning shears, serves as a primary vector for the transmission of the fungus between healthy and infected vines in both nurseries and mature vineyards.

Managing Botrytis tracheiphila requires an integrated pest management approach, as chemical eradication of an established infection is not feasible. Essential control measures include strict nursery hygiene, disinfecting pruning equipment after every vine, protecting large pruning wounds with specialized sealants, and performing rigorous removal and destruction of heavily symptomatic wood to reduce the local inoculum pressure.

  • Sanitization of pruning tools
  • Wound protection with fungicides/sealants
  • Removal of infected woody tissue
  • Monitoring of vine health symptoms
