Description

The genus Candida consists of ascomycetous yeast fungi that are classified in agriculture as opportunistic pathogens. Taxonomically, they belong to the kingdom Fungi, the phylum Ascomycota, and the class Saccharomycetes. Although the vast majority of species are saprotrophic, certain species can adopt a parasitic lifestyle, causing significant damage to the green parts of agricultural crops.

These yeasts typically act as secondary invaders, colonizing plant tissues that have already been weakened by other pathogens, insect pests, or mechanical stress. On crops such as grapes, strawberries, and pome fruits, Candida species can trigger fruit rot, especially in high-humidity environments. The pathogen enters the plant tissue through micro-wounds or the feeding sites of sucking insects, utilizing the secreted plant sugars for growth.

The biological cycle of Candida is characterized by rapid budding, which allows for extremely fast colonization of the host substrate. There are no complex spore structures required for propagation, enabling the pathogen to adapt quickly to diverse environmental conditions. The yeast can survive for extended periods in the soil or on plant debris, acting as a reservoir for infection until favorable conditions return.

Favorable conditions for the development and spread of Candida include high relative humidity (above 85%) and temperatures ranging from +20°C to +28°C. Poor air circulation in high-density plantings or greenhouses significantly increases the risk of an outbreak. Additionally, excessive nitrogen fertilization, which weakens the plant cell walls, creates a more accessible environment for the pathogen to establish itself.

The economic impact of Candida involves the loss of marketability, reduced sugar content in fruit, and post-harvest decay. Effective control strategies include:

  • Improving orchard and field ventilation through proper pruning and thinning.
  • Managing humidity levels in controlled-environment agriculture.
  • Applying prophylactic fungicides to sensitive crops.
  • Integrating pest control programs to reduce mechanical injury to fruits.
