While primarily recognized in medical research, in agricultural science, it is identified as an opportunistic pathogen capable of infecting a variety of plant tissues. It often behaves as an endophyte that can turn parasitic when plant immunity is compromised by environmental stress or secondary infections.

This pathogen causes various rot diseases in fruit and vegetable crops. It primarily targets fleshy tissues where it can feed on available sugars. Infected crops often show signs of rapid tissue degradation and decay, leading to significant post-harvest losses. It is particularly problematic in storage facilities where high humidity facilitates the rapid spread of the fungal biofilm across healthy produce.

The biology of Candida albicans is defined by its ability to switch between yeast and hyphal growth forms. This plasticity allows it to adapt to different nutrient environments and penetrate plant cell barriers. Reproduction occurs primarily through blastospores, which are easily disseminated by wind, water splashes, and physical contact with contaminated harvesting tools or soil particles.

The development of the fungus is strictly dependent on microclimatic conditions, with optimal growth occurring at temperatures between 20°C and 30°C and relative humidity exceeding 80%. It possesses a high resilience to environmental stressors, being able to persist in soil and on plant debris as a dormant spore or within protective extracellular matrix structures until favorable conditions for host infection return.

The economic damage caused by this pathogen includes reduced yield quality and significant financial losses during storage and transport. Effective control and management strategies are essential:

  • Maintaining optimal spacing to improve airflow around the plants.
  • Sanitization of storage facilities and agricultural equipment.
  • Application of suitable fungicides to suppress fungal growth during high-risk periods.
  • Removal and destruction of infected plant debris to reduce primary inoculum.
