Coffee brown eye spot

Cercospora coffeicola

Description

Cercospora coffeicola is a pathogenic fungus belonging to the kingdom Fungi and the genus Cercospora. It is widely recognized as the primary agent responsible for "brown eye spot," a devastating disease that affects coffee plants (Coffea spp.) globally. This pathogen impacts both leaf tissues and coffee berries, leading to severe economic losses for producers.

The primary symptom of the infection is the development of circular spots on the leaves, characterized by a brownish center surrounded by a yellowish or reddish halo, resembling a bird's eye. On the berries, the infection causes dark, sunken lesions. If left unmanaged, these spots coalesce, causing significant leaf drop (defoliation) and decay of the fruit pulp, which lowers the quality of the harvested coffee beans.

The biological cycle of the fungus is driven by moisture and temperature. Cercospora coffeicola produces conidia (spores) that are dispersed by wind, splashing rain, and agricultural tools. Upon landing on a suitable host, the spores germinate and penetrate the epidermis. The fungus thrives in warm, humid tropical environments, where it can complete its cycle rapidly during the rainy season.

Environmental conditions are critical for the spread of this pathogen. It particularly flourishes in dense, poorly ventilated plantations with high humidity levels and frequent rainfall. Coffee trees that are nutritionally stressed—particularly those deficient in nitrogen or potassium—or those grown in direct sunlight without proper shade trees are significantly more vulnerable to infection.

To effectively manage and mitigate the spread of Cercospora coffeicola, integrated pest management (IPM) practices are required:

  • Implementing regular pruning to improve airflow within the canopy.
  • Providing adequate shade trees to regulate light and humidity.
  • Applying copper-based fungicides or systemic chemical treatments during high-risk periods.
  • Maintaining soil health through balanced fertilization to bolster the tree's natural defense systems.
