Cercospora leaf spot of gerbera

Cercospora gerberae

Description

Cercospora gerberae is a fungal pathogen belonging to the genus Cercospora, which is known for causing significant damage to ornamental plants, specifically gerbera daisies. As a specialized parasite, it targets the foliage, where it thrives by extracting nutrients from the plant's cells, leading to substantial physiological stress.

The disease manifests as distinct leaf spots, which typically start as small, dark brown or reddish-brown lesions. As the fungus matures, these spots expand, often developing a necrotic center. The accumulation of these spots reduces the total photosynthetic area of the plant, directly impacting flower production and plant vigor.

The life cycle of this pathogen is highly dependent on environmental moisture. Conidia (spores) are produced in the lesions and are dispersed through splashing water, overhead irrigation, or air currents. The fungus survives unfavorable seasons in dormant states within infected plant debris or contaminated seeds, initiating new infections when favorable conditions return.

Epidemic development is driven by high relative humidity and temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C. Poor air circulation and crowded plant spacing in greenhouse settings are the most common factors that promote rapid sporulation and disease spread across the entire crop population.

Integrated disease management for Cercospora gerberae includes the following practices:

  • Strict sanitation by removing and destroying all infected foliage immediately.
  • Improving greenhouse ventilation to reduce leaf wetness duration.
  • Switching to drip irrigation systems to keep the foliage dry.
  • Applying protective fungicides, such as copper-based products or systemic triazoles, when environmental conditions are conducive to infection.
  • Implementing rigorous crop rotation if growing in soil beds.
