The causal agent of Cercospora leaf spot in lettuce is the fungus Cercospora lactucae-sativae, belonging to the kingdom Fungi and the order Capnodiales. This pathogen is a significant threat to commercial lettuce production (Lactuca sativa), causing foliage degradation and reducing the overall quality of the harvest. It is primarily identified by its characteristic necrotic lesions on the leaves.

The symptoms appear as small, circular or irregular spots on the leaf blade, typically starting on older, lower leaves. These spots start as light tan or brown lesions and often develop a yellow halo. As the pathogen matures, a greyish, velvety fungal growth appears on the center of these lesions, indicating the production of conidia that will serve as inoculum for further infection cycles throughout the growing season.

The biology of Cercospora lactucae-sativae relies heavily on environmental factors, particularly high humidity and temperatures between 20°C and 28°C. The pathogen overwinters on debris in the soil or in infected seeds. During favorable conditions, the conidia are dispersed by water splashes (irrigation or rain) and wind. Rapid disease progression is frequently observed in dense, poorly ventilated plantings where leaf wetness duration is high.

The economic impact of this disease is substantial, as infected plants become unmarketable due to damaged foliage. Even minor infections can lead to secondary pathogens entering the leaf tissue during storage or transport, resulting in rapid post-harvest decay. The disease can cause total crop failure if left unmanaged during prolonged humid periods, significantly affecting the profitability of the farming operation.

Effective control measures focus on sanitation and environmental management. Growers should prioritize the use of high-quality, certified disease-free seeds and implement long crop rotations (3+ years) away from host species. Proper spacing to ensure adequate air circulation and careful irrigation management to keep leaves dry are critical. In cases of high disease pressure, protective or systemic fungicides should be applied following regional agricultural guidelines.
