Cochliobolus miyabeanus (anamorph: Bipolaris oryzae) is a significant filamentous fungus that belongs to the Ascomycota phylum. It is primarily known as the causal agent of the brown spot disease, which affects rice crops globally. This pathogen is considered one of the most critical threats to rice production, particularly in regions with high humidity and intensive cultivation.

The disease manifests as characteristic brown or dark-colored lesions on the leaves, sheaths, and panicles of the rice plant. Under favorable conditions, these spots increase in size, causing leaf necrosis and severe chlorosis. When the pathogen infects the panicle, it results in grain discoloration, reduced grain filling, and inferior milling quality, which drastically lowers the commercial value of the harvest.

The life cycle of this pathogen involves the production of conidia that survive on infected seeds, soil debris, and collateral grass hosts. Infection cycles are initiated by wind-dispersed or water-splashed spores. The pathogen thrives in environments with prolonged leaf wetness, high relative humidity (above 90%), and temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C, often leading to rapid field spread.

The economic impact of brown spot is substantial, as it can cause yield losses of up to 30% under severe infestation. Beyond direct yield reduction, the pathogen contributes to seed decay and seedling blight. The presence of toxic metabolites, such as ophiobolins, interferes with the plant's physiological functions and makes the crop more susceptible to environmental stressors.

Effective management and control strategies are essential to mitigate the impact of the fungus:

  • Selection of disease-resistant or tolerant rice cultivars.
  • Use of certified, fungicide-treated seeds to eliminate primary inoculum sources.
