The disease primarily affects the leaves of sunflower plants. It typically manifests as small, powdery orange to rusty-colored pustules on the abaxial leaf surface. As the infection progresses, these pustules can merge, covering the entire leaf blade, leading to necrosis and preventing the plant from photosynthesizing effectively.
The life cycle of this pathogen involves complex spore stages. Urediniospores serve as the primary means of rapid spread during the growing season, traveling long distances via wind currents.
