Description
Colletotrichum lagenaria (also known as Colletotrichum orbiculare) is a devastating fungal pathogen that causes anthracnose in cucurbitaceous crops. As an ascomycete fungus, it specifically targets plants such as cucumbers, watermelons, pumpkins, and muskmelons, impacting both yield quantity and quality significantly under favorable environmental conditions.
The primary symptoms of this disease include the formation of small, circular, yellowish to brown water-soaked lesions on the leaves. As the infection progresses, these spots turn dark and may develop cracks. On stems, petioles, and fruits, the fungus causes depressed, dark-colored cankers that often produce salmon-colored spore masses (acervuli) when humidity levels are high.
The life cycle of the pathogen is driven by asexual spores called conidia. These spores survive in crop debris and infected seeds, serving as the initial inoculum for the next growing season. When moisture is present, the spores are disseminated via water splash (rain or irrigation), wind, or human activity. The pathogen thrives in warm, humid conditions, with an optimal temperature range of 22°C to 28°C.
The economic impact of Colletotrichum lagenaria is substantial, particularly in greenhouses and humid field climates. It causes defoliation, which reduces the plant's photosynthetic capacity, and direct damage to fruits, making them unmarketable. Severe infections can destroy entire harvests within a short period, as the sunken lesions provide entry points for secondary pathogens, leading to fruit rot.
Management strategies focus on breaking the infection cycle. Key practices include utilizing certified pathogen-free seeds, rotating crops to non-host plants for at least three years, and removing all plant debris after harvest to reduce overwintering inoculum. Furthermore, the application of preventative foliar fungicides, specifically targeting the period of rapid vegetative growth, is essential to mitigate the risk of severe outbreaks.
