Colletotrichum lini is a specialized fungal pathogen responsible for anthracnose in flax (Linum usitatissimum). Classified within the genus Colletotrichum, this fungus is a significant threat to flax production globally, specifically targeting seedlings and mature plants, leading to severe yield losses.

The symptoms of the disease vary depending on the plant growth stage. Seedlings exhibit necrotic spots and browning, often referred to as damping-off, which causes rapid plant death. Mature plants develop sunken lesions on stems and leaves, which can lead to premature wilting and weakening of the fibers.

The life cycle of the pathogen involves the production of conidia in acervuli, which are specialized fungal fruiting bodies. The fungus overwinters primarily in infected seeds and soil debris. During the growing season, conidia are dispersed by rain splashes and wind, facilitating the spread of the infection throughout the field.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in disease development. Colletotrichum lini thrives under high humidity (typically above 85%) and moderate temperatures ranging from 18°C to 22°C. These conditions trigger rapid spore germination and tissue colonization, especially during rainy seasons.

Management of flax anthracnose requires an integrated approach. Farmers are encouraged to use certified disease-free seeds treated with systemic fungicides. Furthermore, agricultural practices such as crop rotation, removing infected plant residues, and selecting resistant cultivars are essential to minimize the impact of this destructive pathogen.
