Cherry crinkly leaf is a viral disorder caused by the Cherry rasp leaf virus (CRLV), a member of the Nepovirus genus. This plant pathogen primarily affects species within the Prunus genus, most notably cherries and sweet cherries, leading to severe leaf distortion and long-term decline in tree vigor.
The disease is characterized by the crinkling, inward curling, and unevenness of the leaves. Infected trees exhibit significantly reduced leaf size and stunted shoot growth. Over time, the virus affects the overall structural integrity of the tree, leading to decreased fruit set, inferior fruit quality, and increased susceptibility to winter damage and secondary pathogen infections.
The biology of the virus is centered on its transmission vector, the soil-dwelling dagger nematode (Xiphinema species). These nematodes acquire the virus while feeding on the roots of infected trees and transmit it to healthy trees during subsequent feeding cycles. Propagation material, such as scions and rootstocks, serves as a major pathway for long-distance dissemination of the disease.
Environmental conditions that favor the survival and movement of nematodes, particularly moist and well-structured soils, significantly impact the spread of the disease within an orchard. Once a tree is infected, the virus becomes systemic, making it impossible to cure with chemical sprays. The spread typically occurs in circular patches, corresponding to the movement patterns of the nematode populations in the soil.
Effective control of Cherry crinkly leaf relies heavily on preventative cultural practices, as there are no direct antiviral treatments for established infections. Key strategies include:
- Planting only certified virus-free nursery stock to prevent initial introduction.
- Rigorous roguing of infected trees, including the removal of the entire root system.
- Testing orchard soil for the presence of viruliferous nematodes before planting.
- Implementing clean cultivation practices to discourage weed hosts that may harbor both the virus and the vector.
