Taxonomic classification: Diaporthe cucurbitae is an ascomycete fungus belonging to the Diaporthaceae family. It is a specialized phytopathogen that predominantly affects plants in the Cucurbitaceae family, leading to various forms of rot in both field and greenhouse conditions.
Diseases and host plants: The fungus causes diseases known as Diaporthe blight or Phomopsis fruit rot. Susceptible crops include pumpkins, squashes, cucumbers, and melons. The pathogen can attack any aerial part of the plant, but the most economically significant damage occurs on fruit, where it causes soft, sunken lesions.
Biology and life cycle: The pathogen overwinters in plant debris in the soil as pycnidia and perithecia. During the growing season, spores (conidia and ascospores) are spread by splashing rain, wind, and insect vectors. The fungus enters the plant through natural openings like stomata or through mechanical wounds, which is particularly common in fruit.
Developmental conditions and impact: High humidity and warm temperatures are the primary drivers for pathogen development. The impact of the disease is severe, as it not only reduces fruit quality and shelf life but can lead to total crop loss under favorable infection conditions. Infected stems may also girdle, leading to plant wilting and premature senescence.
Control and management strategies: Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, immediate removal and destruction of infected plant material, and ensuring proper air circulation are critical. Chemical control involves the application of registered fungicides during the early stages of the disease to prevent further spread of spores, combined with careful handling to minimize fruit wounding.
