It is taxonomically classified under the kingdom Fungi and represents a major causative agent of stem blight and other necrotic diseases in several agricultural crops, most notably sunflower.
The fungus primarily targets sunflowers, causing characteristic necrotic lesions that start on leaves and spread to petioles and stems. This infection leads to the structural decay of the stem, often resulting in severe lodging and reduced yield. In advanced stages, the pathogen can cause complete senescence of the plant, significantly diminishing both seed yield and oil content.
The biological cycle involves both asexual (pycnidia) and sexual (perithecia) reproductive stages. Diaporthe gulyae survives in soil and crop debris, making it a persistent threat in continuous cropping systems. During the growing season, spores are disseminated by rain splash and wind, facilitating rapid infection spread across the field under suitable environmental conditions.
