Phomopsis stem canker

Diaporthe helianthi

Description

Diaporthe helianthi is a highly destructive fungal plant pathogen belonging to the Ascomycota phylum. It is the causal agent of Phomopsis stem canker, a disease that significantly limits sunflower production globally. The pathogen specifically targets the vascular tissue of the sunflower, interfering with nutrient uptake and causing structural weakening of the plant.

The disease first manifests as necrosis on the leaf margins, spreading rapidly through the petiole into the stem. Once it reaches the stem, it creates large, dark-brown lesions that soften the epidermis and cortex. This physical damage often leads to stem lodging, making mechanical harvesting impossible and causing severe reductions in grain filling and oil content in the sunflower seeds.

The life cycle of Diaporthe helianthi is characterized by both sexual and asexual stages. The pathogen survives the winter in infected sunflower residues left on the soil surface. During periods of moisture and moderate temperatures, the fungus produces ascospores and conidia, which are wind-dispersed to healthy sunflower tissues, initiating secondary infections throughout the growing season.

Environmental factors play a decisive role in disease outbreaks. High humidity and temperatures between 20°C and 25°C are ideal for the rapid development of the fungus. Even brief periods of leaf wetness are sufficient for spore germination and colonization of the plant tissue, which explains why the disease is particularly prevalent in regions with frequent summer rainfall.

Control and mitigation of Phomopsis stem canker involve a combination of strategic agricultural practices:

  • Selecting sunflower hybrids with known resistance or tolerance to Diaporthe helianthi.
  • Implementing long-term crop rotation to reduce the inoculum level in the soil.
  • Promoting the rapid decomposition of crop debris through appropriate tillage.
  • Timely application of chemical fungicides during the vegetative stages of the crop to protect young leaves and stems.
