Diaporthe weieri is a fungal plant pathogen within the Diaporthe genus. Classified under the Ascomycota phylum, it is known to cause significant agricultural damage, specifically targeting various legume crops. This pathogen is increasingly recognized in plant pathology for its ability to induce stem blights and pod decay in host plants.

The primary host for Diaporthe weieri is soybean (Glycine max). The disease manifests as necrotic lesions on stems, petiole browning, and reduced pod development. Infected plants often show symptoms of wilting during the reproductive stages, which significantly hinders pod filling and lowers overall seed quality and yield.

The life cycle of this pathogen involves survival on crop residues and in the soil as mycelium or reproductive structures (pycnidia). When environmental conditions become favorable, especially during periods of high humidity and rainfall, the fungus releases conidia that serve as primary inoculum, spreading the infection to neighboring plants via water splash and air currents.

Favorable conditions for the development of the disease include prolonged wet periods and moderate temperatures between 20°C and 28°C. Dense canopy growth, which traps moisture, further accelerates disease progression. The pathogen can also be seed-borne, allowing it to move across geographic regions if contaminated seeds are planted.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to mitigate crop loss. Key strategies include the use of certified, disease-free seed, implementation of strict crop rotation cycles, and deep plowing to bury infected crop residues. Furthermore, preventative fungicide applications during critical growth stages are essential in regions where Diaporthe weieri pressure is historically high.
