Disease symptoms and host plants: This pathogen is primarily responsible for black rot infections in orchids. The disease manifests as dark, sunken lesions on pseudobulbs, leaves, and stems. As the infection progresses, the tissues become mushy and necrotic, eventually killing the affected plant part and potentially the entire specimen if systemic spread occurs.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle involves the production of conidia that are disseminated via splashing water, air currents, or contaminated tools. Once these spores land on a vulnerable host, they germinate and penetrate the epidermis. The fungus then colonizes the intracellular spaces, releasing specialized enzymes to break down cell wall structures, which facilitates further colonization.

Development and environmental conditions: Diplodia laelio-cattleyae thrives in environments characterized by high relative humidity, poor air circulation, and warm temperatures ranging from 22°C to 28°C. Overwatering and water lingering on plant surfaces are the most critical factors that trigger the rapid development of the pathogen and the subsequent spread of rot.
