Discula platani is a pathogenic fungus belonging to the order Diaporthales, widely recognized as the causal agent of sycamore anthracnose. This disease primarily affects trees of the genus Platanus, causing significant damage to the canopy, reducing growth rates, and severely impacting the visual quality of landscaping trees in urban and natural environments.
The symptoms of the infection appear in the spring and manifest as necrotic spots on the leaves, which often follow the veins. As the disease progresses, it can cause "twig blight," where young shoots die back abruptly. Characteristic tiny, raised fruiting bodies called acervuli appear on infected twigs and bark, serving as the source for further spread of the pathogen.
The life cycle of Discula platani is closely tied to seasonal weather patterns. The fungus overwinters primarily in the form of mycelium in infected twigs, branches, and fallen leaf debris. When temperatures reach favorable levels, typically between 10°C and 15°C, the pathogen produces conidia, which are then disseminated via rain splash and wind to infect new, tender spring foliage.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the severity of the infection. A cool, wet spring is the most significant factor facilitating the rapid spread of Discula platani. During these periods, the pathogen can cause multiple waves of infection. Conversely, once hot and dry weather prevails, the fungal growth slows down, and the host tree can recover and produce a second flush of foliage.
Effective management and control measures for Discula platani include:
- Sanitation practices, such as pruning and removing infected twigs and collecting fallen leaves to reduce the primary inoculum.
- Application of protective fungicides during the bud-break phase to prevent initial infections.
- Selection of resistant tree varieties or hybrids where applicable in landscape design.
- Improving overall tree vigor through proper fertilization, adequate watering, and ensuring good air circulation within the tree canopy.
