It is recognized in phytopathology as the anamorph (asexual stage) of the fungus Apiognomonia errabunda. This organism acts as a significant agent of plant diseases, primarily targeting a variety of broad-leaved woody species across forest and urban landscapes.

The fungus is primarily responsible for anthracnose, a disease characterized by localized necrosis of plant tissues. Common hosts include oak, beech, lime, plane, and hornbeam trees. Symptoms include dark spots on leaves, leaf blight, petiole lesions, and twig dieback, which can lead to significant defoliation and canopy decline in severe infection cases.

The life cycle of the pathogen is highly dependent on woody debris. The fungus overwinters as mycelium in fallen leaves, infected twigs, and bark tissue.
